Brand Strategy and Design, Rooted in How People Think
I’m Jamie Thomson — a brand strategist and designer based in Royal Oak, Michigan, working with small businesses on brand identity, website design, and the strategic thinking that makes both more effective.
An Unconventional Path Into Design
My path into this work is not a straight line. I started my career as a clinical psychologist, which gave me a lasting grounding in how people think, make decisions, and respond to the world around them. Over time I felt drawn toward visual communication and design, eventually earning a degree in Graphics Technology and building a practice around brand identity and web design. The psychology never went away — it just found a new application. It shapes how I approach every client project, from understanding who a business is really serving to how its brand shows up at every touchpoint.
The Work
My work centers on small businesses that want their branding to be specific, honest, and grounded in how they actually operate. That means strategy as much as design — understanding a business before making visual decisions, and making sure the two stay connected.
Art and Community
Alongside the design work, I’m an active artist and a cooperative member of Lawrence Street Gallery in Ferndale, where I also serve as webmaster and digital coordinator. I’m a member of the Clawson Clay Guild, and my work spans painting and ceramics. It has been shown at venues including Paint Creek Center for the Arts, the Gallery at Brewery Park, the Flagstar Strand Theatre Gallery, and Hatch Art, as well as in national online exhibitions. I’m also a member of the Detroit Society of Women Painters and Sculptors and The Guild of Artists and Artisans. You can see my artwork at jamiethomsonart.com.
I’ve been in Michigan long enough that it’s genuinely home — the Metro Detroit creative community has been a real part of both my professional and artistic life.
